“People just aren’t spending money right now…”

Let’s talk about it. Because I KNOW you’ve either said this… or heard it from another baker.

  • “People are cutting back.”
  • “Orders feel slower than normal.”
  • “I might need to lower my prices…”

And listen- I’m not ignoring reality. There’s so much going on in the world. There’s talk about strikes, and people are worried about what’s going to happen with the economy.

There is A LOT stacked against small business owners right now.

And ultimately, people ARE being more intentional with their money right now.

But it’s not that people aren’t spending… THEY HAVE MONEY. ****They’re just being more SELECTIVE.

So if your sales feel slow?

It’s not automatically the economy.

It’s your strategy. Lemme explain…

Lowering Your Prices Won’t Save Your Sales

So many bakers fall into the trap of: “If I make it cheaper, more people will buy.”

And sure… maybe a few more will.

But now you’re:

  • Working MORE hours
  • Making LESS money
  • And staying stuck in the same cycle

That’s NOT sustainable.

Eventually, you’re going to come to a crossroads. 1) You’re going to realize you can’t AFFORD to keep offering your prices where they’re at and have to INCREASE your prices. 2) You’re going to LOSE your business because you’ve essentially priced yourself OUT of business, and 3) You’re going to end up resentful and QUIT because you’re burnt out and making no money.

The answer isn’t always: “I just need more orders.” Would it be nice? SURE! But you can be booked and busy and still be broke as a joke.

You need to make more money from the orders you’re already getting. PERIOD.

The Strategy That Will Change Your Sales: “Add to the Basket” 🛍️

So instead of lowering your sales in HOPES of attracting more customers and making more money, lemme put you onto something that works EVERY SINGLE TIME.

This is a strategy I learned from Bath & Body Works, and I continue to teach this to my students to this day.

Think about EVERY TIME you go into a Bath & Body Works. You walk in for ONE thing…

…and somehow leave with five

Why?

Because they don’t rely on one big purchase.

They use small, easy add-ons to increase the total.

  • “5 for $12”
  • “Buy 3, Get 3 Free”
  • Grab-and-go items right at checkout

They make it EASY to say YES to “add to the basket”.

And THIS is exactly what your bakery is missing.

What This Looks Like in Your Bakery

Most of you are focused on ONE thing:

The MAIN “big purchase.” (Custom cakes, cupcakes, etc.)

But the real question you should be asking is:

“What can they ADD?”

Your Menu Should Look Like This:

Main Items:

  • Cakes
  • Cupcake boxes
  • Dessert trays

Add-to-Basket Items (Your Profit Drivers):

  • Cake pops
  • Rice Krispie treats
  • Cookies
  • Mini desserts
  • $3–$6 grab-and-go items

These are the items that turn a $40 order into a $55 order… FAST.

How to Get Customers to Actually ADD More

Because just having these items isn’t enough.

You need to SELL them intentionally.

1. Make It an Easy Yes

Keep the price low enough that there’s no hesitation.

Think $3, $4, $5 max.

It should feel like:

“Yeah… I’ll throw that in.”

2. Bundle It

This is where the magic happens.

Instead of:

  • 1 cake pop = $4

Try:

  • 5 for $25
  • 6 for $24

Now you’ve increased your order value without touching your main pricing.

3. Put It in Their Face

Not hidden on your menu.

  • Show it in your posts
  • Highlight it in your packaging
  • Mention it in EVERY offer

“Don’t forget to add our Easter treat box 🐣”

4. Start Talking About It NOW

This is where most bakers fumble the bag…

You wait until the LAST minute.

And then wonder why sales feel slow.

In order to have RECORD-BREAKING sales, or a successful product launch, you need to CONDITION your customers/audience to buy from you. This means including them in the process, creating hype and excitement around what you offer, and getting them EXCITED about what’s to come.

Easter is RIGHT around the corner. NOW is the time to be knee-deep in your marketing strategy and talking about what you’re gonna offer.

Your customer needs time to:

  • See it
  • Want it
  • Plan for it
  • Come back and BUY

You’re not just selling products…You’re planting the idea of: “OMG! I NEED to order from them.”

What to Do Right Now (Even If You Feel Behind)

Easter is ONE of the biggest sales opportunities for Bakers! So here’s what I’d start talking about RIGHT NOW if I wanted to SELL OUT for Easter!

  • Start pushing your Easter menu immediately
  • Highlight your add-on items DAILY
  • Create simple bundles that increase order value
  • Show your products like they’re a MUST-HAVE
  • Showcase WHY my ideal client NEEDS what I’m offering! (aka WHY this solves a problem for them OR meets a desire/want they have!)

MOST IMPORTANTLY… Stop assuming people aren’t buying.

Because they are. They’re just not from businesses that feel forgettable.

The Bottom Line

Higher sales don’t come from lower prices.

They come from:

  • Better structure
  • Better positioning
  • Better strategy

So no… You don’t need to charge less.

You need to SELL SMARTER!
