5 Lessons the Barbie Movie Taught Me About being a WOMEN in Business!

Aug 01, 2023

Recently, I went to the Barbie movie and in case you haven’t seen it yet, I’m gonna do my best to avoid spoilers, but you MUST see this movie if you’re a woman. You’ve probably seen people on TikTok post that they signed up to go see a movie that was light-hearted, that would maybe make them laugh but the truth is BARBIE is that but it’s also so much more.

It’s a story of womanhood and the journey of being a woman. In childhood, we’re safe, naive, full of imagination, and everything is perfect. But as we grow, we’re faced with reality- that the world is scary, and there’s pain, loss, and unexpected challenges. Yet, as women, we are held to an unrealistic standard.

If you’re reading this on August 1st, today is GIRLFRIENDS DAY…

And I can’t stress enough HOW IMPORTANT collaborative, supportive, relationships are when you’re an entrepreneur, but especially as a woman.

WOMEN: We’re struggling to WIN in life and business. We’re overwhelmed, constantly searching for MORE!

MORE: Time, money, love, attention, and success! Because this is the standard that society holds over us.

So, after watching the Barbie movie and in honor of National Girlfriends Day, I wanted to share a couple of thoughts I learned from Barbie about life and business.

We’re so much more than a “doll”…

We’re MORE than just our looks or what we do for a living. We are our ideas, our hopes, our dreams, our visions, our taste in food, the music we love- WE ARE THE MAGIC SAUCE. And so often we put SO MUCH pressure on ourselves because we think people won’t love us or support us if the things we do don’t work out.

We must unite to SHARE our struggles, be vulnerable, and lift each other up! COMMUNITY and togetherness allow us to have MORE time, money, and SUCCESS! Trust me…

You’re KENOUGH!

We need to be GRACEFUL with ourselves. We can have ANYTHING WE WANT! Literally ANYTHING! But we can’t have it ALL AT THE SAME TIME. NOT ALL AT ONE… why don’t we understand that????

In the movie, there is a quote that America Ferrara says, “We have to always be extraordinary but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.” READ THAT AGAIN!

As women, we are held to these unrealistic standards that were set back in like 1800s and have gotten worse and worse as time has gone on. Yet, we continue to allow these standards to make us feel like sh*t! I’m here to tell you, that you are ENOUGH as you are. Nobody is perfect. No one has their sh*t together. No one is as well-off as you think. Everyone is going through something even if it doesn’t look like it on the outside. So, be kind to yourself! The world is harsh enough as it is.

Mommy Guilt is REAL but it doesn’t make you a sh*tty parent!

The Barbie movie touched on mother/daughter relationships A LOT. To the point that people who have watched the movie are telling other people to go watch it with their moms. Now this part may be a TINY bit of a spoiler so if you haven’t seen the movie, keep on scrolling…

In the movie, there’s a quote that the creator of Barbie shares with her where she says, “We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back and see how far they have come,” and I thought this was SOO GOOD for a couple of reasons. 1) As women who are entrepreneurs or have demanding jobs, we feel guilty leaving behind our kids. We feel like we’re sh*tty parents cause we miss out on a lot of things-whether that's soccer games, ballet recitals, girl scout meetings, or making little Valentine’s Day gifts for our kid's class. But what I’ve realized after raising three girls is that they saw me HUSTLE and bust my a** for them. They learned from me and saw how I showed up and made things happen for them despite unfavorable circumstances. They learned by watching me how to advocate for themselves. They learned how to turn a negative situation into a positive one. They learned that ANYTHING is possible for them as long as they work hard. And a mother, that’s all I could ask for. 2) It makes you pause and think about your own relationship with your mom and the women who are generations ahead of you. Whether those relationships are good or bad- you learned so much from them and that’s something to be grateful for. They walked so we could run and we’re doing the same for our own kids.

Perfection is a LIE!

Your journey through life and business is NEVER going to be exactly how you envisioned it would be. Don’t let this deter you from your dreams and goals. Things may feel really hard right now but one day you’ll realize you had to go through all the struggles to become the person you were always meant to be. THIS is key: You need to be PRESENT in whatever season GOD has you in RIGHT NOW! (*hello, I’m over here PLANTING a whole damn nursery, being FREE, because I’m embracing the season of NOTHING, and learning patience along the way)You’re in this season for a reason. And you have to believe that it’s for something BIGGER. Otherwise, you’re gonna wanna give up. Don’t fall for it, friend! Your journey will be your testimony. Embrace the imperfection and just see what happens.

DREAM BIG

When we’re younger, it’s so EASY for us to live in our own “Barbie Dreamland” where everything is PERFECT. The only issue is as you get older, you become more aware of the world around you. And the real world is scary and full of struggles and challenges- but it can be one of the most beautiful experiences you’ll ever have.

Remember this as you go through life… no tree bears fruit all YEAR ROUND. So neither should you! There will be times of rough terrain, and there will be storms, but there will also be HUGE BLESSINGS that will make those storms seem like a light sprinkle. Stop being so down on yourself because your tree isn’t producing a damn harvest every day. Continue to DREAM BIG, and have faith, because doing challenging things is INSPIRING. And friend, you are inspiring people who don’t even know you.

So on National Girlfriends Day share this message with a business bestie, a cake sister, a friend, a relative, or a partner, and let them know you see them, you love them and you’re in this together! 🙌💖
