How To Summer-Proof Your Business!

The FIRST Summer for the Cake Mamas was BY FAR  the MOST difficult season for us. 

I remember we had little to no FOOT TRAFFIC, our sales were dropping, and our revenue was at an all time LOW. 

I had NO clue what we were doing wrong and was low-key starting to panic because our business was suffering. 

Maybe you’re in the same place, friend? Maybe your sales are at an all-time low and your business is suffering? Maybe you’re a home baker and you’re struggling to attract customers? Or maybe this is your first year in your brick & mortar and have no idea what to offer to resurrect and save your business. 

If any of this resonates with you, READ ON because here’s exactly what I did to SUMMER-PROOF my business! 

Ready for it… 

I got RESOURCEFUL! This means you’re gonna have to step up, put your CEO pants on, get answers and find a way to make it through. 

First thing I did was speak to other local businesses in the community to try to get some answers and if they’ve experienced the same thing. 

That’s when I found out that most families in our neighborhood went out of town from June to August, and that it was totally NORMAL to see a 50-60% decline in your business every summer. 

Now, when I first heard that, I immediately went into panic because there’s no way a business could survive that especially being one year in. So you BETTER believe I wasn’t going to sit by and TOLERATE that sh*t. 

Let me tell you why… 

If I spent an entire QUARTER of the year going into debt, I might as well sell my business and say goodbye. It’s just not conducive to running and sustaining a PROFITABLE business. 

So instead, I worked on ways to SUMMER PROOF my biz and bring the $$$ BACK into my business, hot weather or not. 

And as we move into summer this year, you’re gonna want to be taking notes on how YOU can do the same. 

So, let’s dive right in!

 

1 - Go where the community is

Just because SOME people have left town, doesn’t mean EVERYONE has. 

So, reach out to your community, get involved, and see what it is people want and try to get yourself in front of them HOWEVER possible. 

So things I did was attend movie nights in the park, pop-up shops, community tastings, farmers markets, and ANYTHING that gets your name out there and gets people in your doors (or booking orders).

 

2 - Perfect your summer treats

One of the BEST things you can do for your business in the summer is to focus on anything COLD and DELICIOUS. Ice Cream, popsicles, creamsicles, lemonade – develop a WHOLE MENU of summer-friendly treats, PERFECT your recipes, and ADVERTISE them heavily. This is also a great month to create “SUMMER” inspired flavors and create messaging around summer activities- birthdays, bbq’s, lake days, beach days, etc. You can even elevate your summer treats by adding some AMAZING labels and packaging to set you apart from your competition. 3 - Classes are your best friend

Classes are a great income stream no matter what time of the year it is. But in the summer, they become LIFE SAVERS. 

Offering a few cake-decorating classes a week not only gives you some EXTRA cash, but it also puts you on the radar of your neighborhood’s amateur bakers and helps you build a name for yourself in your community. 

I did exactly this and offered BIRTHDAY parties at our celebration studio, to attract summer birthdays and y’all it was a HIT! 

 

4 - Brainstorm, Brainstorm, Brainstorm

At the end of the day, YOU know your community the best. So, sit down and think of some ideas that can not only SUMMER PROOF your business, but that can actually work in YOUR community. 

Do this WELL in advance so you’re not scrambling to put something together last minute. 

Remember, the BIGGEST and most IMPORTANT part of earning six figures is CONSISTENCY. If you’re not seeing consistent month-to-month profit, you’re NEVER gonna get to that $100k mark.
